Staff Bio

Melissa, Speech Language Pathologist Assistant
I have been a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant for the past 8 years, with experience in both private and in the public schools. Currently, I am a full-time employee in the Kyrene School District working with K-5 students, while also working part-time at Desert Valley. Prior to becoming an SLPA, I was a full-time certified teacher for 12 years, with experience in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade. During this time, I developed a passion for literacy intervention, which eventually led me to the field of speech therapy. I completed coursework through NAU to obtain my license as an SLPA, and love the change. I have worked with a wide range of clients and students, ranging from 2-year-olds through adult clients. I have experience in working with children and adults in need of support in fluency (stuttering), articulation, pragmatic language, and receptive and expressive language. In addition, I have worked with children with an AAC device along with basic sign language to communicate wants/needs. I love being an SLPA as I get to meet a variety of children and families and watch them grow!
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two teenage boys. You will often find me at the baseball field, cheering on my youngest son. I am the proud mom of a University of Arizona student who is thriving in his new college environment-Bear Down! In addition, I enjoy spending time with friends, reading a great book, relaxing in the warm weather, and traveling.
